Cultural Festivals or Events

Sri Lanka celebrates some festivals all year long. January marks the beginning of the year and the Kelaniya Temple hosts the Duruthu Perahera. One of the most significant celebrations takes place in April when Sri Lankans celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year’s and welcome the new year. In anticipation of the Vesak Festival, the locals build dansals, a location where food and beverages will be distributed and attractions that tell the tale of Lord Buddha as May approaches. This is celebrated throughout the country. During July and August, the Esala Perahera is held in Kandy. This is a vibrant event that many people travel to Kandy to witness for themselves. While this takes place in Kandy, the Nallur Festival commences in the Northern City of Jaffna. In October and November, the Deepavali Festival is celebrated, mainly in Colombo and Jaffna.
